I graduated a year ago with a Bachelors degree in Public Relations. I’ve had to do some internships and take part time jobs this year to get by. My internships are done and there isn’t much out there in my field. My part time job is cutting hours to the point that I can’t pay my bills. I was considering applying for a sales position somewhere, but don’t know where, considering it wasn’t what I set out to do. I also am afraid I will have to work weekends and holidays ALL the time. I try to set my weekends aside for volunteer commitments and helping family members with illnesses (6 hours drive away). So I’m trying to have weekends free. All of these other transactions are relatively honest and straightforward – so why is buying a car so different? I have been unemployed for a while and the money is about to run out. I received an offer today and accepted working in the contractor payroll outsourcing sales to F1000 market with A very nice 15 person family like firm financially stable. The other job offer is with a behemoth global large document imaging manufacturer. both are willing to pay the same base salary but the imaging company offers uncapped commissions but longer tougher sales hours. The small company wants to develop me and get me to six figures as soon as possible. My question is given the fact I am a divorced dad with part time custody of a 3 year old which opportunity has the greatest risks and rewards? I don’t need a ton of stress right now either. I know this may seem dumb and a no brainer to some people but positive helpful feedback would be awesome….thanks in advance! By the way to add to the stress, both offers are $25,000 less a year than what I was making in my old job so I need to make commissions as quickly as possible!

I recieved an email asking me to apply for the job saying they pay weekly commissions, and that you do a one day 8 hour training on the phone and computer, and start the next day going on pre-selected appointments to sell the credit card machines to local businesses. But what i am skeptical about is their claim that you can make $3200-$4800/month. All they ask of me up front is to fill out application and background check form, and fax it back. I’ve been offered a sales job that wants me to work about 10 hours a day, every day, sometimes nights with possible posting to permanent night shift. Monthly salary: about US$1000 First two months, company deducts around US$1000 in 2 installments from salary. They claim it’s for company’s training costs. Effectively, I’m slaving or working almost for FREE for them for first 2 months! Minimum 1 year commitment (maybe there were too many who left before?) or the company grabs around US$7000 from me. It’s a sales job, if I don’t make the grade in sales quotas for the company, I may get booted out. If you’re jobless and no decent jobs are available, will you take it? If I take it, I may not like it, like slaving away for nothing. If I don’t take it, I starve and get insults from people who don’t understand. I’m overqualified in many areas and I’m to start off at ground level with other people that don’t stimulate my intellect. Almost every other job here is all commission-based, no fixed pay which is worse. No minimum wage. I’m an Arts grad, for me to do sales is a waste of my talents, but there is no other work available at this time. Need your advice today if possible. If I don’t get back to the company tomorrow noon, my time, the job goes to the next in line. Serious advice is sought. As much as I like to go independent or start a business, I don’t have a cent to start anything right now due to past losses.
